It is worth noting that Reynolds 531 was so successful that it wasn't until 1976 that Reynolds was able to improve on it with the introduction of Reynolds 753. 753 is a very unique, heat-treated tubing with an ultimate tensile strength of 179,200 psi (Compared with 121,000 psi for Columbus SLX). The heat treating process also means that great care must be taken in brazing the tubes so as not to overheat them which would result in a brittle and unridable frameset. To avoid this builders must braze with silver instead of the traditional brass. All this extra care means not just anyone can use 753. In fact, before being allowed to purchase 753 tubing from Reynolds a frame builder must first submit a sample of their work to be quality tested. If the builder makes the grade they become certified by Reynolds, a source of pride amongst many frame builders.

Due to the chemical nature of the material, manganese molybdenum, when heat treated, has to be joined with care. The temperature when joining the frame has to be kept relatively low, and we recommend silver and the use of lugs for this operation. As the use of a silver solder requires special skills, Reynolds have introduced a certification procedure for builders and will only sell this material to those who have completed the procedure. 753 is an ideal material for use in road and track frames as it is a thin gauge, tight tolerance tube. 753 will only be available to special order for builders and Reynolds recommend the use of the heat treated CrMo seatstays and chainstays (725) to complete the frame.

Reynolds 653 tubeset came about with the input of former campione di campioni Eddy Merckx. He instructed Reynolds that a vanilla 753 frame was too harsh for certain stages of the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia. Combining 753 stays with 531 forks and main tubes which were actually a slightly thinner walled version of regular 531. This combination worked well for the racers and resulted in an ultra stiff efficient frame while at the same time providing a forgiving ride when needed
